If you ever watched “Desperate Housewives” you know that woman and especially middle-class mothers can hide a lot behind a smile. There is actually a paper which proves that. Bugental et al. 1971 published a paper with the title “perfidious feminine faces”. They analysed the interactions between parents and their children. The focus was on the verbal content and the visual content. And what did they found out? While in fathers the visual content correlated with the verbal content (meaning: smile = positive verbal content, no smile = neutral verbal content), mothers showed a constant smile regardless of the verbal content. Bugental et al. say that this behaviour may be the result of the “role model of the loving mother” in the society which the mothers like to fulfil. So they smile more while interacting with their children when they feel observed. However, this result is just for middle class mothers because the lower class mothers did not smile at all (in this study!). Daphne E. Bugental, Leonore R. Love, and Robert M. Gianetto.
